Lifestyle Factors in Impotence

Impotence can be caused by a number of conditions. Some of them are physical and some are emotional. Lifestyle habits can contribute to impotence in some men. Lifestyle habits such as smoking, alcohol abuse and taking some drugs can all cause impotence.

Smoking is one cause of hypertension that is often a precursor to impotence. Smoking constricts the blood vessels and can stop the blood flow to the pelvic region. In order for a man to get an erection, he needs to have proper blood flow to the penis. As a man gets older, blood flow becomes more erratic or even slows down in some cases. This is the reason many older men experience bouts of impotence.

Smoking is one lifestyle behavior that causes impotence. Others include substance abuse such as illegal or even legal drugs. Some people who are addicted to certain pain medications can experience impotence. Substance abuse can also decrease the amount of testosterone that is needed to help with an erection. Without the sufficient amount of testosterone, a man many not even have an interest in having an erection. This is why some people feel that those who take marijuana excessively lose their sex drive.

Alcohol plays a huge role in impotence. Too much alcohol will reduce the blood flow in the area and not allow a man to have an erection. Or he will have an erection and keep losing it. A man who wants to have an erection should stay away from alcohol prior to this event.

Other conditions that can cause impotence include atherosclerosis which is a condition where the arteries are clogged, reducing blood flow. This can be caused by a number of different factors including high fatty foods and smoking. Clogged arteries decrease blood flow to the penis and can cause impotence.

Depression and stress can also cause impotence. Although depression is thought of as a psychological illness, it can manifest in ways that will cause you to have physical symptoms, one of which is impotence. Stress can also play a role in impotence. Not only do stress and depression work to cause impotence, but they can also be caused by impotence. A many who suffers from this very common condition that affects most men at least once in their lives, feels ashamed and usually is too embarrassed to seek help.

Fortunately, there is help for impotence. But the first step is seeing your doctor and being honest about your lifestyle choices. Sure your doctor is going to tell you to quit smoking, but if your cause for impotence is due to a physical problem caused by smoking, this cause must be addressed. In most cases, medication is prescribed that can alleviate the condition.

Do not allow impotence to keep you from enjoying your life. If you suffer from this condition, speak to your doctor and be honest with regard to your lifestyle factors. You will find that you can cure the impotence and begin enjoying life again.
